John J. Schaeuble

World War II

John Schaeuble was born in Carroll, IA on July 14, 1921, to Joseph and Clara (Staebell) Schaeuble. The family was engaged in farming in the Westside-Arcadia area. In the early 1930’s, they moved to a farm near Templeton. Later, Joe Schaeuble worked for the railroad and the family moved into Templeton.

John registered for the military draft on February 16, 1942, and was unemployed at that time. He was inducted into the US Army on December 4, 1942, at Camp Dodge near Des Moines, IA. He was assigned serial number 37 446 654. By December 16, he was at Fort Bragg, NC for basic training and a part of the FARC (Field Artillery Replacement Center).

By September 8, 1943, he was stationed at East Hampton, NY. This is on Long Island and there was no significant military installation there. However, four German agents had infiltrated the United States via submarine at this location in 1942. They were ultimately captured and executed as spies. It is likely extra military activity was present to prevent a recurrence.

At some point, John was assigned to Battery A of the 528th Field Artillery Battalion. A portion of this Battalion was sent to Europe but Battery A was not. By June 24, 1944, John was stationed at Camp Crowder in southwest Missouri. This base focused on training for the signal corps and it is unknown why John was there.

His next move was to Camp Gruber near Muskogee, OK. This was an artillery training facility and John was promoted to Corporal while there. By the end of the war in August, 1945, John was still with the 528th FA Battalion. He was a mess sergeant although it is unknown if this was his job throughout his military career or which location provided this training.

John was discharged on January 31, 1946, at Jefferson Barracks, MO. His rank was Tec4 (sergeant equivalent). He returned to Templeton and had a long career with the Milwaukee Road railroad. He never married. John died at the VA Hospital in Omaha, NE on February 17, 1980 at age 58. He was buried in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Templeton.
