Nicholas L. Hoffman
World War II
Nick Hoffman was born at Templeton on October 29, 1909, to James and Mary (Fox, formerly Fuchs) Hoffman. James Hoffman died in 1917 and Mary moved the family to North Dakota, where she died in 1923. James was 14 years old when his mother passed away. Nick returned to Templeton where he graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1929.
In 1930, Nick was living with his uncle Roy Hoffman in Sioux City. When he registered for the military draft on October 16, 1940, Nick was living in Los Angeles, CA where he was self-employed. His registration card was noted as “30 years old, Over age.” He was inducted into the US Army on June 3, 1942, at Fort MacArthur, CA and assigned serial number 39243079.
Nick received his basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, MO. Little has been found about his subsequent experience. He attended Ordnance School and was assigned to the 986th Ordnance Base Depot Company. This unit was responsible for supplying ordnance to combat units. It was semi-mobile and was capable of processing about 170 tons of ammunition daily. Nick and his unit apparently arrived in England in early 1944. By April 27, 1944, they were stationed in Mereton-on-Lugg, Herefordshire near the Welsh border. This was also the location of a major British Army ordnance depot.
The unit was a part of the D-Day invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944, although the details of their activity in unknown. The 986th Ordnance Depot Company supported the movement of the US Army across Western Europe. With the German surrender on May 8, 1945, the unit’s purpose changed. By late 1945, Nick returned to the United States. He was discharged at Fort MacArthur, CA on January 6, 1946.
In 1943, Nick’s brother Gene had purchased the Templeton Locker. After Nick’s discharge, he moved back to Templeton and worked with his brother. On May 11, 1951, Nick married Ella Kyndersen of Brayton, IA. During September, 1960, Nick was hospitalized in Carroll. He died there on October 21, 1960 at age 50. He was buried in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Templeton.
